Pros and Cons of Natural gas powered electrical generators

Natural gas powered portable electrical generators are not something I have thought much about until the recent increase of power outages that have occurred in many parts of the world.

When it comes to electrical power generation I naturally favor a renewable electrical source of power generation. When I share this with friends they say “In a disaster David, how can you use get emergency electrical power from wind or solar power? for example, enough to power emergency equipment?”

This is a good point so I decided to see what is the best non-renewal source to create electrical energy on a temporary basis. This lead to this article on what are the pros and cons of natural gas powered portable electrical generators like this since I understand they are the least polluting non-renewable portable electrical generators and this is what I found after research:

Pros of Natural gas powered portable electrical generators

One

Two

  • Natural gas electrical generators are typically quieter than gasoline / petrol or diesel electrical generators.

Three

  • You could connect your natural gas electrical generator to bottled natural gas in an emergency.

Four

Five

  • The Natural gas electrical generators apparently don’t smell as much as diesel and petrol electrical generators.

Six

  • Natural gas is less expensive than diesel or petrol as a fuel.

Seven

Cons of Natural gas powered portable electrical generators

One

  • Natural gas powered portable electrical generators are often not so portable since they are often this size click for image.

Two

  • They pollute unlike eco friendly wind and solar electrical generators.

Three

  • Natural gas electrical generators are more expensive than gas or diesel electrical generators.

Four

  • Natural gas is a highly explosive fuel.

Five

  • If you connect your Natural gas generator to your home gas supply you will have no fuel source when there is a disaster.

Six

  • They do emit carbon dioxide.

Seven

  • Most importantly even though natural gas electrical generators are convenient in a disaster they are not a long term earth friendly solution.

Now, after all this research I am not convinced of the benefits of a having a non-renewable fuel based natural gas powered electrical generator for long term usage. But I do see the benefit to having one short term to create electricity after a natural disaster so I could have electrical energy to share with people in need of electricity like people who depend on electricity for life support systems.

If you are looking for the pros and cons of a natural gas powered electrical generator I hope this article has been of benefit to you in your time of need.

Sincerely,

David
