One Snap Action to Change Your Thinking

Have you ever spoken to yourself?

Perhaps you have an internal voice that encourages you when you are doing something good for you and all those around you. “You are wonderful”, “Superb”….

Then again sometimes you may have a different type of voice, a little more critical. The voice offers comments like  “That was stupid” “You are not able to do that”… (Yes, I have had this experience too).This voice can destroy your ability to fulfill your personal development dreams and make a big difference in our world.

What can you do to get rid of this self defeating voice?

Personally, I have read and practiced a number of ideas from classic self help books like As A Man Thinketh by James Allen.  I have even worked my way through ideas from Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain and done The Seven Day Mental Diet by Emmet Fox.  These books are helpful for their ideas but to put the ideas into practice is not always so easy.

Then I discovered an idea in a book called  The One Minute Millionaire which contrary to the title is all about personal development and not just about wealth building.

On page 32 there is an exercise called ‘Changing Your Reality is a Snap’. The authors Hansen and Allen recommend you find a rubber/elastic band and put it on your left wrist and every time you think a negative or self defeating thought you ‘snap’ the rubber band.

Yes, it causes physical pain and this pain creates a pattern interrupt in your mental state to get you to be aware of your thoughts. When you ‘snap’ the band then you are to say something positive to yourself to replace the unwanted thought.

Hansen and Allen recommend you wear the rubber band all the time for the next 30 days to make you more conscious of your thinking. If someone asks you what the band is for you can just say it is a reminder.

Personally, as I write this I have a rubber band on my left wrist four days now to test this out. Indeed, I don’t have many negative thoughts (after years of eliminating them) but they do arrive on occasion and well, ‘snap’ I remind myself to get back on the positive track.
