Mindfullness and The Flâneur

Perhaps, you have heard of the French word Flâneur?

I live in France and I just learned about this word from an interview in English with Rolf Potts. Rolf is the author of Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel

A Flâneur is a ‘stroller’ but not the type we put a baby in.

A Flâneur is a person who indulges in the act of strolling casually as an urban explorer. You walk mindful of your environment checking out areas or items where you live that you normally ignored due to a built in need to be efficient in your movement.

With its focus on exploring and absorbing the world around us I think being a Flâneur has a similar feeling attached to being mindful in the way we explore our world. Just like Thich Nhat Hanh in his book Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life (one of my favorites books).

Ok, I dare you to tell you friends you are going for a Flânerie and see what they say.
