My Dad told me once that ‘work expands to the time allotted’. I believe this to be a very powerful statement in terms of how it can sum up productivity in either our personal or professional lives.
For example, when I was in university I worked part time (and sometimes full time) as I studied. Over the years the only time my grades went down was when I did not have a part time job. Since when I had no work schedule pushing me to keep focused and get my school work done in my mind I thought I had all the time in the world to finish projects etc.
Yes, I did have a lot of time so I was unfocused and never put the same effort in that I did when I had the part time work.
Today, I am constantly reminded by the fact that I don’t have as much time as possible to do whatever I want to do when I start working. I always have limited time since I have to keep time in my day for family activities, parenting activities and much more.
Give me an hour at this point in my life and I can do as much work as I did in three hours ten years ago. Since I take the time now to plan effectively what I need to get done and it gets done.
