**

One

Can you get what you need from the web host in question?

Before you decide on a web hosting company ask yourself what type of set up does your website need? Do you need a company that can host a WordPress site? Then make sure the web host you choose can. I found out from my own experience not all hosting service have the systems to host WordPress software. When I decided to use the WordPress software I had to change web hosts.

Note: If the hosting company you find can host a WordPress site find out if you have to install the software or if there is included a free quick install for WordPress.

**

Two

Are you building a business?

Is your site for a small business or small company or an individual or is the site simply for a personal or family venture? A free service can work if you just want something basic to share news with friends and family but they are designed to have limitations so that if you want to do business and earn money by selling products and service you typically have to pay for an upgrade or change to another paid for web hosting service. So if you want to create a business site it is best to start with an inexpensive professional platform that will cost you typically less than ten dollars a month depending on who you choose. It is a small fee to pay to get access to hosting where you can use free open source software like WordPress.org.

**

Three

Which is better for you Shared or Dedicated Hosting?

Shared hosting is typically less expensive than dedicated hosting and will often be the best hosting option for most individual website or small business owners. Make sure you know if you need shared or dedicated hosting before you sign up with a web hosting company.

**

Four

Is the web hosting service secure?

If you are planning on doing online e-commerce on your site like receiving payments for services and products you will want to check if the company you choose has servers that are well protected. I personally did some checking to make sure the hosting company I was going to hire had a secure ordering section on their site before I put my credit card info online. I knew that for my customers to be confident in using my website for its online security I needed to be sure I felt confident in my hosting company’s online security.

**

Five

How fast do your need your website or blog to load?

Make sure your site will load rapidly to suite your needs. If you have lots of graphics this is very important to consider. If you pages load slowly due to slow service from your host many people will click away from your site instead of waiting for the images to build. Check out sites currently on a hosting service you are considering seeing if the host can satisfy your need for speed.

**

Six

How reliable is the web hosting company?

Will your site be up 99 percent of the time or will it go down on occasion and if it does for hosting maintenance reasons can you contact support easily to find out what is going on?

For example, make sure you have phone, email and chat technical support so that if you have a tech problem you have many options to get to a tech person before you become too stressed. I personally insist on having phone tech support since solutions come quicker when I speak to someone and explain the concern.

Note: If you are notified by your hosting provider that you will have your site down for a period of time for server maintenance make sure that you notify your readership. One of the best and easiest ways to do this is via a quick note to your newsletter readership which will contain your most frequent readers. A quick note can be sent out using an email marketing service like the one I use called Aweber. Keep your readers up to date and this will keep their confidence in you.

**

Seven

How much disk space do you get from the hosting company?

The more information you post online the more disk space you will need. The hosting company is paying for bandwidth so you have to pay them for using their bandwidth. It is best to have more than enough than get a bill for exceeding limits. So before you decide on your next hosting company be aware of your site’s potential or current size and anticipate your hosting needs. Also, when a host says you have unlimited access read their terms of service to see exactly what they mean by unlimited access since there is always some fine print that limits your use of unlimited resources when you are paying for sharing hosting services.

**

Eight

How much data transfer ability (bandwidth) will you need?

As visitors increase to your site their entry and exit activity creates data transfer and you need to make sure you do not exceed what is being offered in your package or you will get an expensive bill after a busy month. If your site will be extremely busy even though the provider says you have unlimited data transfer make sure you know exactly what is covered by reading the fine print in their terms of service.

**

Nine

How easy is it to get access to the web host technical support?

I can phone or use chat or email to contact my web host. I typically phone since I prefer to talk than type. Make sure you have the opportunity to speak to someone regardless of which hosting company you choose so you can get a response as quick as possible if a challenge arrives. I recommend you check out the technical support service before you sign up to make sure you like their approach to handling customers. I also recommend you choose a provider that offers phone, chat and email services so that you have all the options you need in times of challenge.

**

Ten

Is it easy to install Shopping Carts (e-commerce software) using the hosting service?

Make sure you can use e commerce services you intend to use on your site whether it is PayPal or another shopping cart system. Some web hosting companies offer e-commerce capability but only on some of their plans. Always check the details.

**

Eleven

Is it easy to install an email marketing programs like Aweber on the hosting company’s server? Some web hosting packages do not allow you to use certain email marketing programs. Before you make a commitment to pay for a hosting service since modern professional sites use email marketing to help them succeed. A quick email, or phone call or check with a friend on their service will get you the answer.

**

Twelve

Is the web hosting companies control panel easy to use?

Many hosting companies offer a web hosting control panel called cPanel but some only offer their own in house system. cPanel is known for its ease of use and if you need technical assistance you will most likely find it easier to find a technician who knows cPanel rather than a control panel system that is unique to one hosting company. Plus if you ever need to change hosts some of the web hosting companies will do the transfer for you only if you have a cPanel hosting control panel.

My host is one of the hosts in the review at the end of this article who offers cPanel so I find it easy to change items like password, add on a domain for a new site and even install a new site or blog with the Fantistico software included at no charge. cPanel also allows you to upload images and do basic administration work without having to contact your hosting service provider.

**

Thirteen

Can you host multiple domain names in the same hosting package?

Not all hosting companies will let you set up separate individual sites within the same hosting account or package without an additional cost. When I used to use Telus each domain name had to have its own hosting package. Now with my current host I can host several domain names attached to separate sites on the same hosting package without an additional cost. If you plan on having more than one website for each of the services you offer or even one for marketing your work and one for items you are selling why pay more for this option when you can get it included.

**

Fourteen

How long do you have to sign up for to get special pricing?

Typically you get special reduced pricing when you sign up for more than one year with a new host. However, I personally recommend only signing up for the minimum one year with a new hosting company as you test their service out. There is no point in getting into a long term contract to get some extra savings (which may be only a dollar or two a month) if you later find out the company is not good to work with and there is going to be a challenge for you to get your refund. Then, if you want, on the second year you can sign up for longer contract at a reduced rate as an already satisfied customer.

**

Fifteen

What is the web hosting company’s money back guarantee?

If you find out you don’t like the hosting company’s service how easy is it for you to get your money refunded? Do you have to cancel within 14 days or within 30 days to get all your money back? And in fact even if you get your money back will there be any service charges deducted from your refund for work the host company has already done?

In most cases as you will see from the review posted below even when a money back guarantee is offered most companies will still deduct service charges from your refunded amount. For example, if you get a free domain name when you sign up if you cancel you most likely will pay a premium to take the domain name with you to another host. Read the fine print before you pay. It always feels better to know there are service charges than find out after the fact.

**

Sixteen

What is the real price for the web hosting?

Often you will see the lowest price on the home page of the web hosting company’s site to get your attention. However, you need to check out the details as to what the 3 or 4 or 5 or even 6 dollars a month will get you. Some of the lower priced web hosting plans offer little more that what you get with a free service since you may not be able to install software like WordPress or do e-commerce or create multiple sites inside the same package at no additional charge. Or if they still offer the right features for you you only get to pay 4 dollars a month if you sign up for a multiyear contract.

** Now that is the end of the recommended questions I suggest you consider when you are going to choose a new web host.

To assist you even more I have done research and created an in depth review of eight web hosting companies that includes earth friendly green hosting companies.

MY HOST

If you are curious as to what company I use it is Hostgator and you can learn more about their services via this link. If you want to try out their web hosting for 45 days you can get a 25 percent reduction on the cost of your order by using my customer code in the sign up process. Use the code HostWellness25. You will need to delete the automatic code in the hostgator sign up form because the automatic code gives you a lesser discount.

Remember if you have any particular tech questions about a web hosting company please consult the host who you can reach via one of the links to them on this site. I don’t know all the details of their service all I am offering here is a comprehensive comparison that took me about 50 hours to put together on this page for you. My goal is to save you time and effort so you don’t have to spend as much time seeking out the same comparison information.

Concluding Notes:

After creating the comparison review I looked at the results and found what I believe to be the top three web hosting companies in the review.

I made sure I focused on important features in my selection of the top three, for example:

Free phone and chat technical assistance,

Free assistance to help migrate (move) a site to their servers,

Free Easy one click WordPress install with easy cPanel hosting control

Free unlimited use of your domain names to create multiple sites in the one hosting package

The achievers in the group in no particular order were:

Hostgator

Green Geeks

Hostgator

Worth noting all these three companies are green web hosting companies! A nice choice in this day of keeping our business in tune with the planet.

IMPORTANT NOTE – my experience with providers

I will share that I have used two of these hosts Hostpapa and Hostgator.

I stopped using HostPapa since I experienced again and again I could never speak directly to technical services when I had a ‘need’ to answer question. I also learned over time that with Hostpapa I could expect my website to be down from time to time while they did maintenance. After seeing how frequent this happened over two years I decided to make a change to Hostgator. At Hostgator every customer service rep I have spoken to is also a tech person. I like that a lot.

The transfer to Hostgator was easy since Hostgator do, in most cases, the transfer from your old host to them for free.

As I mentioned above, with Hostgator twenty four hours a day I can call and speak to a tech person directly. To date I have enjoyed their high level of service.

I mentioned before if you are interested in learning more about Hostgator web hosting services please click on the following link Hostgator and if you decide to try out their hosting you can use my customer coupon code Hostwellness25 which will save you 25 percent off the best price on their site at this time. This is a higher discount on the automatic discount available for first time clients. You also have the Hostgator 45 day money back guarantee. I appreciate you using my code rather than someone elses which might be in the cache of your computer in return for the help I have offered you here.

Thank you, David
