Cookie Consciousness

One Good Cookie - Picture by D. Hennessey

The article I posted on Stress Destroying Breath to help you (and me) with everyday stress management has definitely made a positive impact from the feedback I have been getting by email. Some people have even been inspired to join me in purchasing a copy of the excellent book Peace Is Every Step that inspired the article.

After seeing the response to this last article I decided to share today another idea from Thich Nhat Hanh’s book designed to help people train their minds to be more focused and mindful.

In Peace is Every Step Thich Nhat Hanh encourages us to take a cookie (or you could use an apple if you wish) and eat it slowly becoming very mindful of every part of the cookie that enters into your mouth. You taste each piece and become very aware of what you are doing.

My take from this is that as I become more conscious of the cookie I am eating I am training my mind to keep focused on one thing at a time. I am more conscious of the activity I am involved in whether it is eating, listening, reading or writing. This can lead to better relationships with clients and friends since I am really in the moment and listening to what they have to say.

Another great idea from Thich Nhat Hanh you can tell why I recommend the book Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life.

One final note, I believe, if you are having a challenge with controlling your eating habits eating consciously could be an action that could help you change the way you eat.

Personally, I continue to work on enhancing my cookie consciousness to increase my focus and clarity of mind.

Enjoy a wonderful day,

David
